The other side of Roma stories: Edis Sali

One of the most valuable and best students that the Association provides scholarships to is Edis Sali. He kept a high-grade point average throughout elementary school and now enjoys learning even more in high school. Although it used to be not easy, Edis says it was worth it and he is proud of his success.

“Ever since I was a child, I imagined myself as a hairdresser, that’s what I want to do and I hope to succeed. I live in Zenica and go to the Mixed High School “Mladost”. My schooling was different from the schooling of my peers. I tried as hard as I could even though I didn’t have the funds to go to school. My family was in a very difficult social crisis, but I also had very good results from the first to the ninth grade. “

Edis says that in schools, Roma children are often separated from other children and that discrimination exists. Fortunately, he did not have these problems. He was accepted by his peers and never felt rejected. There are small differences between the customs that his family respects and those that are part of his environment. He enjoys the holidays, which are his most characteristic, the most.

“I love my own and I respect others. My family is very important to me and they support me in everything. I love our holidays, then we are the happiest. “

If he secures a steady income, he will stay in BiH. He loves his city and he would most like to build his future right there. However, if he is given a better opportunity abroad, he will gladly use it.

“My favorite part of the city is Blatuša, where I spent my childhood. I would like to open my own hair salon here somewhere. I want to work honestly and earn for myself, my life and my family. I am most motivated to work and study by the desire to succeed. I didn’t have much in my life, so I was left with a lot of unfulfilled. I would like to be able to afford everything I want with my work. ”

Edis’ advice:

“I would like to tell all members of the Roma national minority to do their best to achieve their wishes and goals. With hard work and a lot of confidence, it is possible to make your dreams come true. ”
