95 students of the 9th grade of the elementary schools “Hrasno”, “Grbavica II” and “Velešićki heroji” participated in the project “Acquainting young people with the judicially established facts of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia” implemented by the Association “Education Builds Bosnia and Herzegovina – Jovan Divjak”, and is supported by the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo.
The project activities consisted of a visit to the Information Center of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, located in Vijećnica, where Ismena Čaušević, an employee of the Information Center, introduced the participants to the basics of international humanitarian law, the work of the ICTY and its legacy. The participants then had the opportunity to visit the City Hall with Dražen Jerkić, an employee of JP “Sarajevo”, and the mayor of the City of Sarajevo, dr. Benjamina Karić.
In the continuation of the program, elementary school students from the area of the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo had a lesson during which they talked with associate professor Dr. Midhat Izmirlija on the difference between facts and judicially established facts, as well as on the importance of memorialization and spaces such as the Novo Sarajevo Memorial Center on Heroes’ Square. dr. Hasan Tanović, the mayor of the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo, attended one of the classes and took the opportunity to talk with the younger residents of the Municipality.
Through the project, the students were introduced to the importance of judicially determined facts, as well as access to them through the ICTY databases, which enables them to further analyze the events in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the period 1992-1995, and in the continuation of their education.
The association “Education builds Bosnia and Herzegovina – Jovan Divjak” expresses its gratitude to the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo for recognizing the importance of such a project, as well as to the Information Center of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the City of Sarajevo for their cooperation within this project.
